Save the World by Consuming Less Meat / Film Review on COWSPIRACY: The Sustainability Secret

I watched a documentary on Netflix that completely blew up my mind about the livestock industry. People who care about eco-friendly global issues should definitely watch this film! To anyone who cares. Please go watch COWSPIRACY: The Sustainability Secret

“We must consume meat to get a sufficient amount of protein for daily use.” “Meat gives us protein.” These are a myth in fact. In general, people think vegans are thin and without muscles, however, Mac Danzig, a mixed material art champion, stated that he is a vegan and he has noticed that since he stopped consuming any animal proteins, he is more energetic during training and exercise and his muscles grow and repair faster and better than before.

Many studies have shown that vegans have a much lower risk of getting cancer, chronic diseases, and cardiovascular diseases than those who eat meat. They even have a lower death rate.

In fact, the higher the intake of dairy products (milk, cheese, etc.), the higher the risk of osteoporosis. The reason for this is because one of the main mechanisms for this is that animal proteins create an acid body called metabolic acidosis. To balance this habitus, our bodies would naturally take out the best buffer that can against the acid, which is the calcium in our bones. When calcium is used to neutralize excess acid in our bodies, our bones become weak. Yet, it is incredibly difficult to change people’s behaviors. Therefore, many international organizations nowadays are recommending people to drink low-fat or nonfat milk.

However, do you know that if we compare dairy products that are high in protein and low in fat to prostate cancer, they are as closely related as lung cancer to smoking? Isn't this crazy? I mean, how many of us knew about this? This clearly shows the damage that animal proteins can do to the human body.

You may not know that your dietary choices have profound global effects!

Eating less meat would reduce the need for livestock farmers to raise food animals, which would increase biodiversity since there would be less deforestation for growing corn, soybeans, and other monocultures for farm use; Eating less meat,  deforestation of the Amazon jungle region will be reduced;

Eating less meat, the food system would not be controlled by only a few large food corporations; Eat less meat, greenhouse gas emissions will be greatly reduced and the greenhouse effect will be greatly improved;
Eating less meat will help the world to go green several times more than strict recycle or saving a lot of natural resources.

You can simply save the world by eating less meat! Because it takes 10 times more fossil fuel to produce one calorie of animal food as it does to produce one calorie of plant food! Doesn't this blow your mind?! Since the 1970s, more than 20% of the Amazon jungle region has been cleared for livestock, which equals to the size of the entire state of California. Just think about it for a sec! The world's livestock alone consume enough grain to feed 8.7 billion population, but there are still 1 billion people living on a daily basis of underfed or malnourished.

According to public information released by the United Nations, animal husbandry is the main cause of global warming! Alert here! Animal husbandry produces more greenhouse gases than all transportation combined (locomotives, cars, trains, boats, planes, etc.)!

Livestock farming is the leading cause of global warming, according to published United Nations data. Animal husbandry produces more greenhouse gases than all transportation (motorcycle, automobile, train, boat, airplane, etc.) combined!

The best way to take responsibility for your health and for the survival of the earth is to eat fewer animal products. Just a small change in your food choice, the world can be saved.

Film Review: Rotten - Bitter Chocolate

The world loves chocolate. Million tons of chocolates are being made and sold every year. Different flavors of chocolate can be found in almost every store that sells food. Among these chocolates, Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa is responsible for 40% of the coco production in the world; however, the coco farmers earn less than 1 USD per day. The chocolate industry is estimated to earn more than 100 billion dollars a year, yet, the profit is gained by human trafficking. Children were trafficking to West Africa as slaves for farming coco 2 decades ago, and the industry promised to fix this modern slavering issue by 2005, yet, the deadline has never been met. Moreover, the price set by the London market calculation can only let the coco farmers in West Africa earn less than 200 USD per year, which is way lower than the minimum wage for living. Even though there are regulations regulate the farm gate price of coco beans, farmers don’t have the choices of who to sell the beans, so they...

Animal Welfare?

Recently, more people are concerned about animal welfare and animal rights. Speaking of them, I attended an educational training course hosted by the National Animal Industry Foundation in Taipei a few weeks ago. During the course, the speaker said that the reason for Taiwan to legalize tail docking of swine is because when the density of animals in a narrow space is too high, the tail of a pig can easily cause other pigs to feel upset and irritable, which could cause cannibalism, especially the situation of tail biting. Since tails are close to the anus, it’s easy to cause bacterial infection. Although this is a very practical issue, I literally laughed when I heard this. This sounds like a law designed to promote animal welfare and reduce the number of unhappy and aggressive pigs; however, isn't the best welfare for animals is to let them grow naturally with plenty of space to move around? It makes me wonder if tail-docking swine is in favor of animal welfare for pigs or economi...

Our Food System Needs Some Serious Changes

Since the emergence of industrial agriculture, we’ve been asking the wrong question: “How do we make the most possible money; rather than how do we produce the most appropriate food?”    Our food system has problems in every aspect. The system we have today is to produce and market food for the benefit of businesses. However, if what we, as customers, want is to be able to eat healthy, safe, and affordable food, then what we need is a system to try to achieve that goal. Sustainable is the agriculture issue that concerns me the most. How can the distribution of food for humans and livestock be met without the continued exploitation of natural resources? How to deal with the so-called meat culture? How to make the agriculture system sustainable? There is a ginormous amount of land being mined for growing commodity crops e.g., corn and soybeans because they have a high production rate and they can shorten the growth time of food animals reaching the slaughtered weig...
